That makes sense, and to clarify, I am more detailed focused. I struggle more with the big picture and abstract nuances. So it isn’t an issue with the story telling.
Also I just forgot that Virgil knew how to build weapons xD
haha, no worries! i don’t expect everyone to remember every little thing. honestly, you guys are keeping track of a lot more stuff than i would have expected!
As for videos and such, I realized I always imagined the city to be a strict dictatorship like North Korea. The general population doesn’t have internet, and what they can see is strictly controlled propaganda. So they have very limited education and outside knowledge. As they only know what the government allows them to know. And since it’s a run down city in black and blue, I figured the population would be much too poor to have the resources for a weapon like that.
It’s more how do they know to build a rail gun? Military gear are classified and they wouldn’t have the blue print. Unless some of the robots can access this stuff. Like hacking or something.
i think it’s more of an issue of motivation. people surrounded by technology, but also fear and poverty had less motivation. and, it was established previously that virgil knows how to make weapons, as he made his own, and it now leading that community of people to action.
as for the money aspect, you could imagine that if they didn’t have enough funds before, they might now with financial backing from sandrine. i never explicitly said any of this, but i think people could come to those conclusions. maybe.
but the city isn’t a dictatorship. it’s more of a free for all libertarian nightmare where people are occasionally victimized by feudal crime bosses.
Florida has so many Canadians, it seems almost like a Province anyhow.
There are two great songs about the last time the USA and Canada got into a scrap, the Arrogant Worms’ “The War of 1812” and Johnny Horton’s The Battle of New Orleans (about the battle that decided nothing, if both sides were content to observe the terms of the peace already concluded, which isn’t actually obvious, but made les Amis feel much better about ourselves).
Fortunately the elegant carpentry of Toronto, no yet called “Toronto”, and Washington D.C. was soon rebuilt in each malarial hellhole (I actually love my home town, Toronto … and the museums in DC) and life went on, with Thomas Jefferson’s reputation not recovering until his death for botching the American preparations for war, their timing, national unity and all that … it’s odd to recall that until 20 years ago he was THE progressive icon of North American historiography and a bugbear to much of what remains fo the right and center in academia.
Well, it all depends on what spare parts are lying about. There are a number of YouTube videos on DIY rail guns. Given advanced tech, any nitwit with pliers and CNC/3D printer/whatever can cobble something up, and a gun is not out of the range of possibilities.
The question that remains is how fast the gun can cycle, and what will the other side will use to return fire.
May I ask how they got a rail gun?? XD
That’s like a civilian running onto a Air Force base and taking off with a jet. I can’t imagine those things are easily (or legally) accessible by the general population. Otherwise, cool animation! :D
they built it. the general population is compromised in no small part by sentient robots in a futuristic, albeit run down city, but a rail gun seems like a bridge too far? haha, ok.
Wait, wait, wait … that truck just rain down some of their compatriots and they fired the railgun at … the big mechashield in the sky? Priorities!
you know how it is. you got the thing aimed, and set up, and it’s a whole kerfuffle to lower it….
God bless and keep James Taranto for popularizing that word.
what, kerfuffle? i think it reappeared in my normal vocabulary once i watched all of ‘little britain’. love that show.

What, you mean, Texas?
(I’ll show myself out.)
woah woah woah….. i didn’t say that. i’m canadian, and i don’t want to start a thing where it seems i said something negative about the US.
but with all the crazies and a rancid river of filth running through it, i’d say more like florida.

man, florida as a province…. scary thought. maybe that’s why florida has it’s rep. we’re exporting our worst canucks.
The Tech Tree notices the shot that bounced off of the mag shield … a devastatingly disproportionate response in 3 … 2 … 1 …

I’m sure they stole some of the parts.
That escalated quickly
