End of the Line

weird week. had a mini crisis of ‘art’. work on the comic, work on paintings….. work on what you want to improve at, and the jack of all trades masters nuttin’.

and what i mean to say, is that i decided i should pull back on trying to be some fancy concept painter for kicks, and recommit to drawing. i know it all seems like it’s in the same wheelhouse, but you’ll get to a point with most things, where going forward means specializing, or spreading yourself so thin you seemingly make no progress. painting is leg day. i tried not to skip leg day. now i’m thinking, i should skip a few leg days.

so, i make this sort of realization, and decide to practice some more line drawing. pen and ink, black and white, back to basics. i look up some more reference, try to buckle down and work on the fundamentals. i start watching some videos and works from kim jung gi, a long time inspirator of mine (i know it’s not a word, shush your butt).

things are great for a few days, and then on a reference hunt, instead of images that pop up, it’s articles. at 47, kim goes ahead and has himself a heart attack boarding a plane, and dies. i’m calling BS. that’s too young.

now, i never met the man, and cause i never like to know more than i need to know about people i like online, i never learned anything about him. that’s just self preservation. i’m not brave enough to do a deep dive on famous people, cause you will more than likely find something out about them that will sour you on them, so i just tend to avoid it. BUT, i will say that at 47, this guy left a body of work that would amaze someone if you thought they lived 3 lifetimes. do yourself a favour, look him up, and enjoy his work. i also did a sketch of him, and posted it to my patreon, and my instagram. he’s getting a lot of memorializing in art, so i thought i would add to the pile.

anyways, i thought i’d share that coincidence with you all. now i will return to my magical incantations to harness his power. what?! he’s not using it anymore……
