Why do robots need money? As Volodya Putin has shown us recently, even in the future, power ain’t free, though it is sometimes cheaper than food, which also ain’t free. And then there’s the cost for really good streaming services.
Gretchen just gave the robot brain of Beardacles a mercy killing. It was probably thinking nonstop about the beard it could never regrow, having to scream but lacking a mouth to do so with.
beard = 0…. yeah, i was thinking about true cyborgs, like, if you were a tech wizard, maybe you would want some sort of paired AI brain. you know, a helpful whisper, or just something in the background that did math….. and how would that thing carry on if half of it was wiped out just like that.
That reference will never be outdated. NEVER.
What do robots even need money for? They don’t need to eat or sleep?
Well, we haven’t gotten a lot of information about robots in B&B, but we do know they can be difficult to fix and they can’t just have their memories sucked out and put in a new body. Part of the reason Virgil wound up with a hook was that his system could only accept a narrow selection of replacement parts (or just his original hand, repaired). Repair costs for them are probably on par with medical costs for people.
As for the heralds, their barely-sufferable need for three aggies seems to be unchangeable programming everyone just puts up with. Best commentary on it was 409 and 410
not to be THAT guy, but the reason virgil got a hook, is cause it’s all he could afford. at that time. but yeah, i wanted to make the parallel that medical costs for people are relative to repair costs for robots, and that no one, aside from the very rich get upgrades. most people just get worn down over time. like life.
Whoops! You’re correct, THAT GUY, I left out the whole “narrow range of replacements” would have driven the cost up too much for Virgil, in the doctor’s opinion. I must have gotten distracted and failed to finish getting that thought out of my head.
I think Virgil’s repair scene was the first time you brought up hints of how robots work different in B&B.
yeah, i tried to not overtly drop huge explanations on the story. seems burdensome. but i did want things to work differently. more difficultly than hoping down to the store for a new this or that.
i think of it as a compulsion. that every herald has a stash somewhere that they don’t use. maybe they just roll around in it like smaug.
At the risk of this reference being too out-dated…
“So the Tech Tree Director says, ‘I need about tree aggies.’ And it’s about that time I realize the ‘Director’ is an illusion-casting torture robot from the pre-Incursion era…”
hahaha, i nearly snorted out my milk. and i haven’t drank milk in years.
Making people laugh while drinking is one of my favorite things since high school! >:D
Oh wow, I just realized that was a very stealthy reference to the kidney transplant episode. Well played sir!
why thank you, thank you. i like to stay current with my references. that one is about….. 15 years old? very fresh.
