When Lord Acton warned that “power corrupts” he was referring to the reactions of journalists and historians who will bend over backwards to justify the crimes of their favourites in addition to their lesser sins. But since those folks bought ink by the barrel back when many people had their letters written by clerks/clerics, well … guess how that old adage ended up beign recycled?
The fact she’s not surprised and indifferent that Gretchen did this to him concerns me. What other things has she seen that lady do and casually shrugged off? O_o
i think the same of a lot of people who try to make heroes out of the spouses of terrible people. like, there is absolutely people who are closer to the abuse, and get the worst of it, 100%, and i have nothing for sympathy for those people. but then there are those, in the public eye, who are seen as courageous, or virtuous, when they were more than happy to reap the rewards of comforting and supporting terrible people, so long as it wasn’t aimed at them. i think Elle is the latter, and is just sort of a weak, milquetoast person. to me at least.
