i gave this some thought when i started out. there’s practical protection reasons like humans have, of course. but moreso than that, if you felt like your autonomy was in question, and that you were seen by many as ‘not real’ and just a machine, you might start doing things to express your personhood, and to eschew rudimentary choices where you could be perceived of merely as some thing that takes up space.
for some robots, these might just be affectations to seem more real, like the heralds do, with fancy suits and sitting with a martini. but virgil wears a ratty sleeveless tee, and julius puts on a hat whenever he can, cause in my mind, he’s trying to cut a more human silouette.
this actually comes up in a future point of the story, and when you see it, you’ll know the part i’m referring to, i’m sure.
