Never say never, though… Many of the webcomics I read have done kickstarters. They plan for it as they go thru the comics, while being made.
I’m sure you have a Real Job, etc. (It’d be nice if the comic paid ALL the bills!)
Publishing is changing. Again. Some artists are finding that it’s more affordable… though I’m still waiting for book 2 thi get reprinted on one of my favorite comics…
In the first crowd funding effort Minna Sundberg (A Red Tail’s Dream, Stand Still Stay Silent currently running), has admitted the “interest” (money spent on her book!!) astonished her. Hert first one brought in over $200K, I believe. Her 4th book is in kickstarter now, last look it was nearing $300K. Mind you, the comments section, though long, just doesn’t seem to hold enough ppl to suggest those numbers. She asked a bit first, thi se who would buy her book. She was worried she’d get stuck with them.
In the end, I think she made about half the books she could have sold. (So she has reprinted it and is still selling them!!
I would buy at least 2, maybe 3. 🙂🤪
When you decide to make them. And if I’m still alive, something I feel I need to say, at my age. One never knows when Lady Death will meet one or where
(For some reason the reply button doesn’t work, this is meant to be a reply to the reddit thing)
As soon as you posted a bit you can crosspost to other subs like r/comics, r/cyberpunk, r/webcomics, r/newsubs, etc.
It’s surprisingly effective. I had a YouTube channel that I have given up very fast, but the videos I promoted on reddit where the only ones with views.
Anyway, I’m the second member on the subreddit now^^
well i appreciate the follow on the subreddit, and we’ll see how it goes, i suppose. with any luck, when i can start posting in multiple forums at once, that’ll help get some traction. thanks for all the ideas!
i’m not sure you can do that, actually. i suppose an e transfer to my email would work, but either way i appreciate the thought! i don’t have the most readers, but i got the best ones.
I have talked at least one creator into putting up a Ko-Fi link. That is set up more for one-time donations. I have not heard anyone bitch about Ko-Fi yet, and a number of creators already use it, so … take it for what it’s worth.
Maybe an (relatively) easy way to get more readers would be a subreddit? Cyanide and Happiness do that in a quite clever way. They don’t upload their new comics, they upload links to the comic strips on their site every day. On their own sub and on comic and webcomic subs A bunch of other creators do it in a similar way.
Of course you’d have some catching up to do, but it’s very effective.
haha, i think that you might be over estimating how many readers i have to compare me to cyanide and happiness.
i’m actually not all that familiar with reddit. i’ve posted some art there, and i think i’ve gained a few readers that way, but it’s still a situation where i’m spread a little thin, and don’t have all that much time to figure out new venues. it’s an idea…. but i don’t know if the time spent could be worth the readers i would gain. thanks for the idea though!
You have surely already thought of this but I’ll put it here since a lot of other people will think it and you can refute it and save them typing the question.
If you funded the publication with a kickstarter campaign you would not have to take any risk of a loss; you just don’t do it if there is not enough interest (where interest == backers putting up money).
oh, yeah i considered that. but running a kickstarter means advertising for it, creating it, launching it…. it’s almost like making something just to make something. unless you’re going after a big goal, it’s almost not worth the time it would take to do it right. though i’ve seen some great ones for board games and the like.
i figure it’s more important that i keep going with the story, and let the comic be what it’ll be. maybe one day?
aww, well thank you. i do appreciate the props. yeah, it’s a lot of work, and a lot more to do. as for a physical copy of the comic, i looked into that, back when i was new to the webcomic scene, and i hoped my readership would keep growing. but now that i don’t have any advertising going, my views are kinda dwindling, and i don’t think i would be able to sell even a fraction of what it would take to even break even on such an endeavor.
my patreon money keeps the lights on, pays for my photoshop license, and my webhosting, and i more or less break even, but i can’t afford to take more of a loss than i already do. which is sad, but i have a real job too, and other responsibilities….. and i’m always painting stuff for my instagram… something has to give! hahah
shout out to all the fans though, thanks for everyone who diligently visits every week and supports my work. big time thanks!

I want to make a $20 dollar NON-recurring payment. It seems as if Patreon only allows recurrent payments. How can I make a payment to you?

you know, it actually wasn’t too hard. i don’t know how to promote it at all, but i set up the subreddit here…. https://www.reddit.com/r/BlackandBlueComic/
we’ll see how that works. thanks for the prodding!

Wow! 451 pages! (Whenever you feel up to it, a paper copy of the comic would be appreciated. )
You do such good work.
