Another sequence ends with a bang. The next sequence will be a little different, and you’ll see next week what i mean. There’s a flashback, and i know that sometimes when i do that, and i only post up on the top left corner ‘the past’, as the pages continue, we might all forget that we’re not viewing events as they unfold for our heroes in the present time. To them. SO, i’ve decided from here on out, any flashback sequence will have a suffix to denote that it is in fact taking place in the past. Hopefully that alleviates some of the confusion.
Next on the blogenda, a while back someone mentioned they’d like to see a certain panel of the comic on a t-shirt. I meant to post it, but life gets in the way of things, and then i did not. But, someone, a year or more later seconded the motion, and i have decided to upload the image. put it on a tshirt, a mug, a keychain, some sexy panties, or whatever. maybe not that last one….. or whatever. i’m not the boss of you. Of course, just cause someone mentioned they would like something on a shirt puts them under no obligation to get it. I don’t even think i make any money on this, and it took 10 minutes to do. pure fan service. enjoy!
Finally, after much hemming and hawing, i’m going to rescind my recommendation for the new Cowboy Bebop series. Sadly. I had high hopes! that and i was only a few episodes in when i told people to check it out. As it continued, i think it lost it’s way, and it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when it happened, or why, but it’s a bummer. i think they did a lot of things right, and oddly, the show looked expensive and slick, while oddly cheap and lazy at the same time. It’s weird.
I’ve been seeing a lot of other people echo similar sentiments lately, but there’s a growing droning din from a certain corner of the internet that is blaming ‘wokeness’ on the show’s cancellation. I don’t think that’s a fair criticism, and i think that most people that blame anything on that usually have a very superficial understanding of how the industry works. It’s a business after all. Studios are trying to make money. ‘It’s going to be a huge flop, but let’s make sure everyone feels good about representation’, said no studio exec ever.
But I think it goes to how hard animation (especially anything as over the top as anime) is going to be to adapt to live action. Spike wasn’t 7 feet tall weighing 110 pounds. that’s real life, baby! but i think most of the focus was why Fay didn’t have XXX boobs. and also weigh 110 pounds. So, that’s my rant. A little disappointed, but it makes sense. I’ve softened over the years in my attitude towards reboots and adaptations. I say people should follow the source material, or else why bother, but some liberties are natural. Watching something fail, as an artist, i feel a bit of kinship to the people who have worked on a production, only to see it get cancelled immediately after launch. And on top of that, to have the small but vocal minority of toxic weirdos give you a big ‘i told you so’ for daring the attempt? well, all i can really say is that creative types don’t usually feel the need to cater to people who drag them down. it’s not that kind of relationship.
The good news is, netflix will be looking for something new to adapt! it’s time for me to hit those phones, and start haranguing them with calls, pretending i’m actually a grass roots movement to make Black and Blue, the show! i know where we can get some cheap sets no one is using…..
I’ll gladly recommend the live action One Piece. It’s become one of my favorites. There’s only 1 season out, but I believe I checked a few months ago and it had been green lit for season 2!
It’s very fun. Because of it, I look for Monkey-based work anywhere.
Oh yeah.. I was one who requested that shirt. Still love it! Thank you for it.
i’ve heard good things, but it’s a little silly for my tastes. i’m looking forward to season 2 of silo. bunch of people trapped in a generational lo tech/hi tech future….. might be surprising, but it appeals to me.
Eh, Seagull needs a scope that records video. Then he can show boss Ari what he’s been shooting.
Cowboy Bebop, from what I’ve heard, was too expensive to make, and too little in revenue from it. That’s all. I never read the manga, I’ve just heard that it was faithful to the original, and maybe a bit too faithful. Now as for Hollywood screwing up source material, Ghost in the Shell was one of the many monumental failures. It takes many hands to make a cliched disaster. They left out all of the really interesting dialog from the manga, and mashed everything together like bad meatloaf pretending to be patte, with potatoes and gravy of unknown origin on the side. Good manga, decent anime, decent anime movies, and then … Hollywood.
and i’m sure that’s all there is to the story. just the boring reality of what costs what, and how well it did. but people need to pin a failed agenda to everything that didn’t work out… it’s sapping the joy out of entertainment at best. at worst, it’s dancing on the ashes of the jobs of people who became unemployed.
i never read the manga for gits, but i did watch the series, and the movies, so i think i had an idea of how cool it could have been. but, leave it to hollywood to shoot into a forest and miss the trees.
Epilogue? Still threads to unwind…
I am completely “over” the toxic wierdos. The most laughable are the “well if so, then I’m going to stop reading!!!1!” idiots.
Correct answer from rest of fans, and author: “and … ?”
luckily, i’ve gotten very little of that myself. i usually see it directed at other people. either i’m not big enough to evoke that feeling of betrayal from people, or i’ve just cultivated a good reader base. probably a bit of both!
Y’know…with regards to the Netflix series of your comic, you’ve had worse ideas my friend.
right?! then again, you see how they flubbed a well beloved anime, black and blue would probably just be an open field and a bucket on a mannequin for virgil.
but i like to daydream. that, and i am READY to sell out! come at me hollywood! i have no shame, or ethics, and my artistic integrity is tissue thin!
I’d watch, and unlike The Tick or Firefly or The Dresden Files (Go Canadian taxpayers!!!!), I’d actually watch in time to help out your revenue streams (instead of waiting until it hits the public library).
haha, on a goof, i looked up how to submit ideas to netflix. seems they have an official ‘don’t call us, we’ll call you’ policy. as in, unless you’re already famous, and have an in, it ain’t happening. which is fine, i mean, makes sense, or else they’d be sifting through pitches all day every day. looks like i’ll have to be a success BEFORE i sell out.
